A fatal road accident over the weekend in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has left three people dead, including a husband and wife.

The crash, which involved a heavy-duty truck and a commercial tricycle, occurred at the Itagbanja axis of Oke-Aro, along Idanre Road in Akure South Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses attributed the tragedy to reckless driving by both the tricyclist and the truck driver.

While two victims reportedly died instantly at the scene, the third succumbed to injuries while being rushed to the hospital.

As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the deceased had not yet been confirmed.

The incident sparked outrage in the community, with angry youths and residents attempting to lynch the truck driver.

However, he managed to flee the scene and later voluntarily surrendered himself at the ‘B’ Division Police Station in Oke-Aro.

Following reports that the driver had turned himself in, a mob stormed the police station, pelting it with stones and demanding justice for the victims.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State confirmed that an investigation into the tragic incident is already underway.
