The family of the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the respected leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, has formally announced the burial arrangements for the elder statesman.
Chief Adebanjo, a revered nationalist, passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96 in his Lekki residence in Lagos.
In a statement jointly signed by his children, Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, the family revealed that the funeral and church service will take place on May 3 at St. Phillips Anglican Church, Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode in Ogun State. A thanksgiving service is scheduled for the following day, May 4, at the same venue.
Additionally, a Day of Tributes and Service of Songs will be held on April 30 at 2pm at Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The wake is slated for May 2 at 4pm at Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s country home in Isanya Ogbo.
Expressing their appreciation for the outpouring of love and condolences, the family said “The family invites friends, colleagues, political associates, and the general public to join them in paying final respects to a man whose courage, integrity, and unwavering belief in justice left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political history.”
Sharing a glimpse into his life, the family noted that “Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, widely known as Chief Ayo Adebanjo or Pa Ayo Adebanjo, was born on April 10, 1928, in Ogun State, in the south-western region of Nigeria.”
“He was born into the family of Joel Adebanjo Adedairo and Salamotu Odubanke.”
Chief Adebanjo began his early public life as a journalist before proceeding to the United Kingdom to study law.
“His political journey began in 1943 as a member of the Zikist Movement, before joining the youth wing of the Action Group in 1951, where he became a political disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.”
“Throughout his life, Chief Adebanjo remained a fearless advocate for democratic governance, true federalism, and Yoruba interests within the Nigerian federation.”
“He will be remembered as a titan of Nigeria’s nationalist struggle and a principled voice in the country’s post-independence political evolution,” the family added.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chief Adebanjo was widely admired for his steadfast dedication to democracy, Yoruba unity, and national progress.
