A petrol-laden tanker caught fire on Thursday in the FIDSCO area of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway, Ogun State.

Seni Ogunyemi, Commandant of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, confirmed that the tanker fell into a ditch before it ignited.

Despite warnings from authorities, numerous residents were seen attempting to scoop fuel from the spill.

Ogunyemi reported, “A serious accident occurred involving a loaded tanker with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) that fell into a ditch at the FISCO axis, Ijebu-Ode, along the Benin-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, heading toward Ijebu-Ode.”

He added that both the police and fire services had been alerted to the situation.

“The community has been advised to maintain a safe distance from the tanker, but many have ignored these warnings. Efforts are underway to transload the product safely,” he noted.

In a later update, Ogunyemi confirmed that the tanker had indeed caught fire.

Firefighters were on the scene working to extinguish the flames, but he did not provide information regarding any potential casualties.

“The previously reported tanker has caught fire, and the fire service is actively engaged,” he stated.
