President Bola Tinubu has put forward the nomination of Saseyi Feyijimi Ibiyemi, a seasoned lawyer, as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State.

The announcement was made on Monday evening by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

According to the statement, if Ibiyemi’s nomination is approved by the Senate, she will succeed ‘Niyi Ijalaye, who passed away in August while serving as REC for Ogun State.

Ibiyemi, 58, who hails from Ilaje in Ondo State, is currently serving as the Administrative Secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State.

A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987, Ibiyemi was called to the Nigerian Bar the following year.

She also holds a Master’s degree in Election Management from Bingham University in Nasarawa State.

In addition, President Tinubu nominated Abdulrazak Yusuf Tukur, 59, as a National Commissioner for INEC, representing the North West.

Tukur holds a Bachelor’s degree in Arts from Bayero University, a postgraduate diploma in Economics from Bradford University in the UK, and a Master’s degree from Leeds University, also in the UK.

Tukur’s long tenure at INEC began in 1999, when he joined as an assistant chief administrative officer.

Over the years, he rose to the position of Director of Electoral Operations and Logistics, a role he held until his retirement in December 2023.

Like Ibiyemi, Tukur will need Senate confirmation before his appointment is finalized.

Both nominations are subject to clearance by the National Assembly.
