Doyin Okupe, the former director-general of the Obi/Datti presidential campaign, has emphasized that there is an understanding that Nigeria’s presidency will alternate between the north and the south, with each region serving for eight years.
In a recent interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Okupe pointed out that after President Muhammadu Buhari’s two terms in office, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the current president, is expected to serve his own two terms as well—provided he delivers on the nation’s challenges.

He expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, stating that if the president can address Nigeria’s pressing issues, such as the fuel and food crises, by 2027, he will earn a second term.
“Tinubu is performing exceptionally, and he will continue to improve. The country is going through a tough time, but with understanding, Tinubu will overcome these challenges,” Okupe said. “If he succeeds in resolving the nation’s issues, Nigerians will recognize his efforts and support him in the 2027 election. Nigerians are reasonable and not asking for too much.”

Okupe also noted that while the current administration has faced criticism, especially in comparison to Buhari’s tenure, the public has remained largely supportive.
“Bola Tinubu will serve for eight years, as long as he stays healthy and the people want him to continue. It’s an agreement that the north has had its turn, and now it’s the south’s turn,” he added.
