Equatorial Guinea’s President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has dismissed Baltasar Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), following a sex scandal that has shocked the nation.
Engonga, a 54-year-old economist, was removed from his position and replaced by Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo, according to reports from local news outlets Ahora EG and Real Equatorial Guinea.
The dismissal is linked to a range of serious allegations, including Engonga’s involvement in an illicit scheme where he secretly filmed explicit videos with the wives of high-ranking officials.
According to Ahora EG, the scandal came to light during a fraud investigation, which led authorities to raid Engonga’s office and home.
During the search, investigators uncovered more than 400 videos, some of which allegedly feature prominent women, such as the President’s sister, the wife of the Inspector General of Police, and several wives of ministers in the government.
The footage was reportedly recorded with the consent of the women involved, though it has since been leaked, causing a media frenzy.
In addition to the explicit content, Engonga’s conduct was also deemed inappropriate for someone holding a public office, leading to his dismissal as outlined in Decree number 118/2024, issued on November 4.
The case has drawn widespread attention in Equatorial Guinea, with many describing it as one of the most shocking scandals to ever emerge in the country.
