Ahead of the 2027 general elections, opposition parties in Nigeria are taking significant steps toward forming a formidable alliance aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term.

The coalition, referred to as the “mother of all opposition alliances,” seeks to unite political forces to counter the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leadership.

Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives from Imo State, revealed that the opposition would soon announce the formation of what is being called a “granite coalition,” which could include or exclude the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ugochinyere criticized the PDP for failing to provide strong leadership and opposition at a time when the country is grappling with numerous challenges, calling for a reorganization of the party’s structure to strengthen its resolve against the APC.

Otunba Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson for the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, launched a new initiative called the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as “The Alternative.”

This coalition is aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s democracy by addressing issues such as the erosion of electoral integrity, lack of clear ideological direction among political parties, and declining voter trust.

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), an umbrella group of opposition parties, endorsed the initiative, with its National Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, asserting that the CUPP would work closely with like-minded groups to form a strong, unified front capable of challenging Tinubu’s administration.

He stressed the importance of a credible opposition in the face of Nigeria’s economic challenges, insecurity, and corruption.

The CUPP’s goal is clear: to oust the APC from power and restore good governance.

Chief Chekwas Okorie, founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), predicted that political realignments would intensify by mid-2025, although APGA itself would not likely merge with other parties.

Instead, Okorie suggested that his party would focus on constructive engagement and a progressive coalition government.

He emphasized that APGA is committed to national unity and development, with a focus on equity and justice for all citizens.

The National Consultative Front (NCFront), a political coalition that seeks to promote democracy in Nigeria, has also expressed its commitment to driving the formation of a mega opposition alliance.

Mallam Hamisu Santuraki, spokesperson for NCFront, stated that the group is working to bring together credible political leaders from across Nigeria’s opposition parties, including the APC, PDP, Labour Party (LP), and others.

This initiative was officially launched on February 6, 2024, aligning with the birthday of Prof. Pat Utomi, a prominent opposition leader and chair of the Fusion Committee, which includes key figures from various parties.

The Labour Party (LP) has also expressed confidence in its ability to play a key role in the 2027 elections, building on the success it saw in the 2023 elections.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, reiterated LP’s willingness to collaborate with other opposition forces in order to replace the APC and restore governance that works for Nigeria’s citizens.

As the 2027 race approaches, the formation of a unified opposition alliance could be crucial in altering the political dynamics of the country.
