Former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, has expressed grave concern about the current state of insecurity in the country, emphasizing that Nigeria cannot afford another civil war.
Speaking at the Plateau Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos on Friday, Gowon reflected on the devastating impact of the Nigerian Civil War, which occurred between 1967 and 1970 and resulted in the loss of millions of lives.
He prayed that the nation would not endure another period of crisis like the one witnessed during the civil war.
“The various crises we are facing in Nigeria are deeply troubling. This is something we should not be experiencing after all we went through during the Civil War,” Gowon stated, urging Nigerians to pray for an end to the ongoing turmoil.
“I have prayed to God that Nigeria will not go through another period of crisis like we did before. We must pray for peace, asking God to touch the hearts of those responsible for causing unrest, so they can change their ways and contribute to the well-being of the nation.” he said,
The event, held at the Ten Commandments Prayer Altar in Du, Jos South Local Government Area, marked the inaugural Plateau State Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival.
It brought together prominent figures committed to fostering peace and unity in Nigeria.
Alongside Gowon, the event was attended by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Plateau governors Joshua Dariye and Jonah Jang, as well as Boni Haruna of Adamawa State.
Other distinguished attendees included Ambassador Mary Lar, Professor Jerry Gana, retired military personnel, and various government officials, all of whom joined Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang in the celebration of unity and peace.
