Operatives from the Anambra State Police Command have apprehended two individuals suspected to be cultists and armed robbers, seizing several weapons and other incriminating items from them.
The suspects, Okechukwu Chinwuko, 27, and Ezenwa Chinedu, 22, were arrested by officers from the Anti-Cultism Squad during a raid in Enugu-Ukwu, located within Njikoka Local Government Area.
According to a statement released on Monday by the police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrests took place on the evening of Saturday, December 7, 2024, following a raid at a known black spot in Umunaga Village, Awka South Local Government Area.
Ikenga revealed, “Acting on reliable intelligence, the operatives raided the area and arrested Okechukwu Chinwuko, 27, and Ezenwa Chinedu, 22, both from nearby villages. During the operation, officers recovered one pump action gun, four live cartridges, a cutlass, suspected criminal charms, and substances believed to be hard drugs.”
The police spokesperson also confirmed that two female victims who had been sexually assaulted by the suspects were rescued during the operation.
The suspects are now being interrogated by the police, who are investigating their criminal activities.
Additionally, Ikenga reported that on the same day, officers from the Igbo-Ukwu Divisional Police Headquarters recovered a white Peugeot J5 Boxer bus, registration number AKL 896 XB, and a roller, among other items.
He further explained that the criminals had been attempting to vandalize a Lister generator at an MTN mast near Saint Martin’s Catholic Church in Umudege when they fled the scene upon seeing the police team.
The authorities are continuing efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and have appealed to the public for assistance in providing information.
