An Abia State High Court in Umuahia has acquitted five pro-Biafrans who had been held in detention since their arrest in July 2022.
The court’s ruling, delivered on Thursday by Hon. Justice A.O. Chijioke, brings an end to their lengthy legal struggle.
The acquittal was confirmed by Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lawyer representing the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), during a press briefing in Owerri.
Ejiofor explained that the five individuals were initially charged with conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, and membership in an unlawful society under case number HU/61C/2022.
The prosecution presented three witnesses during the trial, but the court found the evidence insufficient to substantiate the charges, ultimately granting the defendants their freedom.
Ejiofor commended his legal team, including Dennison Agu, Chinwe Umeche, and others, for their dedication to securing the release of the detainees.
He expressed his satisfaction with the ruling, emphasizing the significance of a fair judicial process.
“We are pleased with the judgment, which reflects the importance of justice and fairness,” Ejiofor stated.
He also reaffirmed IPOB’s commitment to seeking the release of all pro-Biafrans who are unjustly detained across the country.
Ejiofor urged pro-Biafran supporters to remain peaceful and lawful in their pursuit of self-determination, affirming that it is both a constitutional and legitimate right.
