Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has shared a heartfelt reflection on his journey from an Almajiri school pupil to leading Africa’s largest energy company.
In a post on X on Wednesday to mark his 60th birthday, Kyari expressed deep gratitude to Allah for the blessings and opportunities that have shaped his life.
Kyari particularly expressed appreciation to former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu for giving him the opportunity to serve as the last Group Managing Director (GMD) of the NNPC and the inaugural CEO of NNPC Ltd.
In his message, Kyari acknowledged that his life’s journey cannot simply be understood by reflecting on past events alone.
He credited his experiences both positive and negative as well as the support of Allah for shaping the path that led him to this point.
“By Allah’s grace, I have been spared to celebrate my 60th year, a milestone that is even more significant on the Hijri calendar,” Kyari wrote.
“I am deeply grateful to my country for allowing me to rise from an Almajiri (Tsangaya) school pupil to the CEO of Africa’s largest energy company.”
Kyari expressed special thanks to Presidents Buhari and Tinubu for entrusting him with key leadership roles at NNPC, acknowledging the “exceptional privilege” to serve in these capacities.
Reflecting on his life’s journey, he highlighted the hardships and successes, describing his life as a series of challenges, triumphs, and growth.
At this milestone, Kyari vowed to continue his work with even greater determination, seeking to serve the nation with a deeper sense of purpose and commitment.
He also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to his family, friends, colleagues, and mentors, acknowledging their unconditional support throughout his career.
“This is a turning point, and I seek forgiveness from anyone I may have hurt, intentionally or unintentionally,” he concluded.
