The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on Monday, citing multiple financial and statutory infractions.

Following the impeachment, Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Lasbat Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1 and is a former chief whip of the House.

Obasa’s removal comes in the wake of reports that he oversaw the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers, alongside other controversial financial activities.

It was also revealed that Obasa was in Atlanta at the time of the impeachment.

Obasa, 52, had served as Speaker since June 8, 2015, during the tenure of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

His time in office has been marked by repeated allegations of fraud and political thuggery.

In 2020, investigations by The Gazette exposed how Obasa allegedly diverted public funds to his personal businesses and bank accounts.

Following media reports on his financial dealings, Obasa was invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning.

However, he denied the allegations, and no charges were filed after he met with EFCC investigators.
