Brazil has officially announced Nigeria’s inclusion as a partner country in the BRICS bloc, a move aimed at furthering the shared goals of strengthening cooperation among nations in the Global South and advocating for the reform of global institutions.

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the announcement on Friday, emphasizing Nigeria’s significant role in both Africa and the world. As Africa’s largest economy and the sixth-largest population globally, Nigeria aligns with BRICS members in its commitment to enhancing South-South relations and global governance reforms, key priorities during Brazil’s BRICS presidency in 2025.

Brazil, which took over the presidency from Russia on January 1, welcomed Nigeria into the BRICS partnership, highlighting the country’s strategic importance.

Nigeria joins other nations such as Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan in this new category of BRICS partner countries, which was officially created at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024.
