A petrol tanker explosion at Dikko junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State has resulted in numerous casualties, with many feared dead and others injured.
Witnesses reported that the tanker, which had spilled its contents, triggered a rush by locals to scoop the fuel.
Tragically, a pregnant woman and a mother with a one-week-old baby were among those caught in the explosion.
Though the death toll is not independently verified, eyewitnesses have suggested that over 30 people may have lost their lives in the explosion.
Officials from the Niger State Fire Service are currently working to extinguish the fire.
Governor Umaru Bago expressed shock and deep concern over the incident, calling it “worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate.”
He extended his sympathies to the victims’ families and urged residents to prioritize their safety.
The Governor has instructed all relevant agencies to take immediate action in managing the emergency situation.
