He described the incident as a national tragedy that underscores the urgent need for stronger safety regulations across the country.
The explosion occurred along the Ugwu-onyeama Enugu-Onitsha Expressway when a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) collided with other vehicles, triggering a massive fire.
The resulting explosion killed several people and left others severely injured, many of whom have been hospitalized for treatment.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Professor Nnam extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Enugu State.
He acknowledged the shock and grief that the families is experiencing following the tragedy and called it a painful reminder of the safety challenges facing many communities across Nigeria.
“This horrific tanker explosion is not only a tragedy for Enugu State but a national disaster that calls for immediate attention,” Prof. Nnam said.
“I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, and I pray for the swift recovery of those who sustained injuries in the inferno. This is a sad day for our state and for the nation as a whole.”
Prof. Nnam also emphasized the importance of addressing the recurring issue of tanker explosions and the broader safety concerns surrounding the transport of dangerous goods on Nigerian roads.
He called on both state and federal authorities to take proactive measures to prevent similar incidents, urging for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, particularly in the transportation of petroleum products.
“While we mourn the loss of these precious lives, we must also advocate for the implementation of stricter laws and regulations to prevent such incidents in the future. The safety of our citizens should be paramount, and it is crucial that we take decisive action to avoid similar tragedies from occurring,” he stated.
The former commissioner further called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion and urged the relevant agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of any negligence or misconduct are held accountable.
Nnam expressed solidarity with Governor Peter Mbah, describing his response as swift.
