Tragedy struck Amegu Nkalaha Community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State as suspected herdsmen launched a deadly attack, killing and injuring several residents.
The assailants, armed with guns and machetes, reportedly stormed the village in the early hours of Sunday, leaving a trail of destruction.
Homes were set ablaze, and many residents were either killed or severely wounded.
The Chairman of Ishielu LGA, Mrs. Ifeoma Agwu, confirmed the attack but noted that the exact casualty figure was still being determined.
“We are in the process of evacuating the victims’ bodies to the mortuary. More details will be made available later,” she stated.
A prominent member of the community, Prof. Ndubuisi Idenyi, a former chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Ebonyi State University, described the attack as devastating.
“My village, Amegu Nkalaha, was attacked today by herdsmen. Many have been killed, and houses have been reduced to ashes. This is a tragic day for us,” he lamented.
He further explained that search efforts were ongoing to recover the bodies of those who may have been killed while working on their farms.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Ebonyi State, DSP Joshua Ukandu, stated that he had not yet received an official report on the incident but assured that investigations would be conducted.
