The Enugu State government has commenced the payment of gratuities to civil servants who retired from January 2024, following the directive of Governor Peter Mbah.

Confirming the development on Tuesday, the State Accountant General, Mr. Anthony Okenwa, stated that the payments began with retirees who had successfully completed the biometric verification process introduced to eliminate ghost workers from the state’s payroll.

Okenwa further explained that gratuities owed to retirees from 2010 to 2024 have been put on hold for verification, with plans to settle the backlog in installments once the process is completed.

“As instructed by the governor, we have started paying gratuities to those who retired this year. The backlog of gratuities from 2010 to 2024 will be addressed in phases after the verification exercise is concluded,” he said.

Governor Mbah, during his 2023 election campaign, pledged to clear outstanding pensions and gratuities inherited from previous administrations.

The Accountant General assured retirees that the government remains committed to fulfilling this promise, ensuring that all arrears are paid gradually until they are completely settled.
