The Rivers Restoration Movement (RRM) has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to back another Ijaw candidate for the governorship position should Governor Siminialayi Fubara be impeached.

In a statement signed by its Director-General, Johnson Georgewill, and Secretary, Mrs. Sarima Akpata, the group expressed full support for Wike’s recent remarks on the political situation in Rivers State.

They emphasized that legal processes, rather than threats or violence, should determine political outcomes.

Reaffirming the constitutional basis for impeachment, the RRM stated, “If a governor commits an impeachable offense, the House of Assembly has the right to initiate proceedings as outlined in Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution.”

The group further noted that outside Bayelsa State, the Ijaw people cannot single-handedly produce a governor in states such as Delta, Edo, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, or Rivers.

Given this reality, they argued that if Fubara is removed, Wike should ensure that the governorship remains with the Ijaws to complete their tenure.

According to the RRM, their appeal is rooted in the principles of equity, fairness, and justice, considering the historical and political interests of the Ijaw people in Rivers State.
