In a recent directive, the Federal Government has instructed the National Universities Commission (NUC) to notify Vice-Chancellors whose tenures are nearing completion to nominate Deputy Vice-Chancellors (DVCs) who will temporarily oversee the VC’s office.

According to a memo dated May 28, 2024, from the Federal Ministry of Education to the NUC Executive Secretary, signed by Mrs R.G. Ilyasu, Director of University Education, on behalf of Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman, the nominated DVCs will serve in a temporary capacity until the appointment of substantive VCs.
The memo further outlines that after the Governing Council’s inauguration, an Acting Vice-Chancellor will be appointed for a minimum period of six months. During this time, the Council will initiate the process of appointing a permanent VC.
This directive aims to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of leadership within universities as the terms of current Vice-Chancellors come to an end.
