Aliyu Betara, a member of the House of Representatives representing Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwaya/Kusar Federal Constituency in Borno State, has donated N100 million to aid victims of the recent flood in Maiduguri.
The donation was announced on Friday during an on-the-spot assessment of the flood-affected areas in the state capital.

Betara pledged his support for the victims, acknowledging the extent of the devastation caused by the flood.
He also promised to raise the issue in the House of Representatives once the National Assembly resumes session.
“We are immensely proud of you and pledge our unwavering support in all areas as we work to alleviate the suffering of our citizens who entrusted us with leadership positions,” Betara said. “On behalf of myself, my family, and the people of Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwaya/Kusar Federal Constituency, I am donating N100 million to assist those affected by this disaster.”

The lawmaker also commended the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, for his swift response to the flood crisis and actions taken to mitigate its effects.
He extended his condolences to the families affected by the flood and prayed for those who lost their lives.
The flooding in Maiduguri occurred after the collapse of the Alau Dam, which had been at full capacity due to heavy rainfall.
The resulting floodwaters submerged large parts of the city, displacing thousands of residents and causing significant damage to homes and livelihoods.

The Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, issued a public advisory urging residents living near riverbanks to evacuate, but despite these warnings, many were still affected.
Reports indicate that heavy rainfall has exacerbated the situation, with additional flooding reported in areas such as Biu, Chibok, Konduga, Bama, Dikwa, and Jere Local Government Areas.
The United Nations estimates that at least 414,000 people have been displaced by the flood, and 37 deaths have been confirmed.
Betara’s donation is expected to provide immediate relief to many of the displaced residents, as efforts continue to mitigate the impact of the disaster and support those affected.
