The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the appointment of CP Peter Ukachi Opara as the new Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

Opara succeeds CP Benneth Igwe, who has been promoted to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).

CP Opara, formerly the Commissioner of Police at the Force Secretary’s Office and a past Deputy Commissioner of Police for Administration and Finance in Imo State, brings extensive experience to his new role.

His career includes serving as DCP Legal Studies at the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, and holding various positions such as Area Commander in Aba and Uyo, and Senior Deputy Defence Adviser to the Nigerian Permanent Mission at the United Nations in New York.

Opara also had stints as a personal assistant to former Police Service Commission Chairman, IGP Mike Okiro (rtd), and several Inspector Generals of Police.

In addition to this appointment, the PSC has approved the replacement of CP Miller Gagere Dantawaye with CP Festus Eribo as the new Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State.

CP Eribo, a law graduate from the University of Calabar, previously served as Liaison Officer at the Police Service Commission and Assistant Commissioner of Federal Operations at Force Headquarters.

His past roles also include Area Commander in Lagos and Ibadan, Deputy Commissioner at Zonal CID Zone 9 in Umuahia, and Commissioner of Police in Taraba State.
