A suspect has been arrested following what the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) described as an assassination attempt on former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, on Sunday evening.

According to initial reports from Trump’s campaign organization, gunshots were heard in the vicinity of the former president while he was golfing at his West Palm Beach golf club in Florida, which is near his primary residence, Mar-a-Lago.

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump’s campaign, said in a brief statement.

The FBI confirmed that two individuals were involved in an exchange of gunfire just outside the golf club.

No injuries to Trump were reported, though the suspect was apprehended following the incident.

This marks the second reported assassination attempt on Trump in recent months.

On July 13, a gunman identified as Thomas Crooks opened fire at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, injuring Trump with a shot to his right ear.

In Sunday’s incident, a Secret Service agent reportedly spotted a weapon resembling an AK-47 emerging from bushes near the golf course, prompting the agent to engage the suspect, preventing further escalation.

Trump later reassured supporters via social media that he was “safe and well,” while the FBI continues its investigation into the matter.
