Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO), has announced her intention to seek a second four-year term as Director-General.
Her spokesman, Ismaila Dieng, confirmed the news on Monday, stating that Okonjo-Iweala’s decision was influenced by “overwhelming and broad-based support” from WTO members.

Her current term, which began in March 2021, will expire in August 2025.
Okonjo-Iweala officially communicated her decision to WTO chair, Norwegian Ambassador Petter Olberg, on Monday.
During the same meeting, the WTO’s African Group formally requested her re-nomination and urged for the process to begin promptly.

No other candidates have announced plans to challenge her for the role, making her re-nomination likely.
Throughout her tenure, Okonjo-Iweala has focused on revitalizing the 166-member organization, known for its bureaucratic challenges.
As a former Nigerian finance and foreign minister, she has built a reputation for pushing reforms and driving results.
