The House of Representatives on Thursday advanced a bill seeking to create Ogoja State from Cross River, as it passed the second reading.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by Hon. Godwin Offiono and three other lawmakers, aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to establish a new state in Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone.

During the session, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas called for a voice vote, which saw the bill gain support. Subsequently, it was referred to the committee on constitutional review for further scrutiny and debate.

If approved, Ogoja State would become the latest addition to Nigeria’s federating units, marking a significant restructuring in the region.
