The Nigerian military has issued a stern warning to individuals calling for the overthrow of President Bola Tinubu’s government, labeling such demands as treasonable.

The military high command emphasized that those making such calls would face legal consequences if they persist.

In response to a viral video showing some Nigerians urging military personnel to take over the current administration, citing economic hardship due to the removal of fuel subsidies and the floatation of the naira, the military dismissed the calls as attempts to incite discord.

Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, condemned the actions and reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to the Tinubu administration.

He stressed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have no reason to intervene in governance, noting that they have received substantial support from the President.

“The relative peace we are enjoying today is a direct result of the President’s unwavering support for the military and the dedication of the Armed Forces leadership,” Gusau said.

He reiterated that the military is fully committed to upholding and advancing Nigeria’s democracy and urged those advocating for unconstitutional changes to desist.

“The AFN and other security agencies have been directed to take appropriate action against any individual or group promoting such treasonous ideas,” Gusau added.
