The Joint Action Committee (JAC) representing non-teaching staff unions in Nigerian universities has announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday.

This decision arises from the ongoing issue of four months’ worth of withheld salaries for its members.

The JAC consists of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

A circular outlining the strike was sent to all branch chairmen at universities and inter-university centers, signed by NASU General Secretary Mr. Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim.

Titled “Latest Development in Respect of the Withheld Four Months Salaries,” the circular emphasizes the disappointment over the failure to disburse even the 50% of withheld salaries that President Bola Tinubu had approved.

Despite numerous warnings and requests for resolution from the unions, the government’s commitment to addressing the issue remains questionable.

The JAC has decided to initiate the strike at midnight on October 27, 2024, allowing NASU branch officers to prepare for coordinated action.

The leadership expressed gratitude for members’ ongoing support and reiterated their determination to continue the fight until their demands are met.
